Recent changes to Ontario Public Service workplace attendance requirements have created new barriers for some residents of rural and northern Ontario.
For many qualified people, distance from major office locations can be measured in hours, not minutes. As workplace attendance requirements change, geography is becoming an increasingly important factor in who can realistically access or maintain certain public service careers.
This issue extends beyond today's workforce.
It also affects tomorrow's graduates, future applicants, young families, and skilled professionals deciding where to build their careers and lives.
Rural Employment Access Ontario is a grassroots initiative advocating for employment policies that recognize Ontario's geographic realities while supporting equitable access to public service careers.
We believe opportunity should be determined by qualifications, experience and ability, not postal code.
Employment access is about more than individual careers.
Public service jobs contribute to local economies, support families, attract skilled workers, and strengthen communities across Ontario. When employment opportunities become less accessible because of geography, the impacts extend well beyond individual employees.
Communities can lose experienced professionals.
Young people may choose to build their futures elsewhere.
Local businesses lose customers.
Municipalities face greater challenges attracting and retaining residents.
Economic growth becomes more difficult.
Policies that influence where people can realistically work also influence where people choose to live.
Opportunity shouldn't depend on postal code.
Promoting equitable access to Ontario Public Service employment opportunities for qualified residents of rural and northern communities.
Supporting employment policies that help retain skilled workers, strengthen local businesses, encourage population growth, and contribute to long-term economic development.
Advocating for policies that ensure today's decisions do not unintentionally limit tomorrow's opportunities for students, graduates, young professionals and future public servants who choose to build their lives in rural Ontario.
Changes to Ontario Public Service workplace attendance requirements have created new challenges for some residents of rural and northern Ontario.
For many qualified employees and future applicants, the nearest provincial office may be several hours away. As workplace attendance requirements increase, geography is becoming an increasingly important factor in whether certain public service careers remain practical or accessible.
The impacts extend beyond current employees. They also affect students considering careers in public service, young professionals choosing where to build their futures, and experienced workers deciding whether they can continue living in rural communities while pursuing meaningful careers.
Employment policies influence more than where people work. They influence where people choose to live, where families put down roots, and where communities can attract and retain skilled workers.
We believe public service careers should remain accessible to qualified people across Ontario and that opportunity should be determined by ability, not postal code.
